For our customers, reliability and quality are paramount. It’s why North Coast Container (NCC) puts such a huge emphasis on rigorous standards and processes that ensure our customers consistently receive high-quality products. This includes earning important ISO certifications, developing a dedicated internal audit team, and adopting the Toyota Production System (TPS).
In this article, we are going to do a bit of a deep dive into these certifications and processes, including what they mean, why they are important, and how they benefit our customers. By the end, you’ll see why NCC’s huge success as the largest independent steel drum manufacturer is rooted in our dedication to these standards.
NCC’s ISO Certifications
Perhaps the most important standard that NCC holds is the ISO 9001 certification for Quality Management Systems. This certification is held across all five of our facilities, ensuring that NCC meets the demands of industries that rely on stringent quality and safety standards. In other words, it assures our customers that our products meet or exceed regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of recalls and ensuring seamless production.
Additionally, NCC recently acquired additional certifications in ISO 45001 (Safety Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management). These certifications will strengthen our ability to support industries where product integrity and regulatory compliance are paramount.
Benefits of ISO Certification for Our Customers
Enhanced Consistency and Quality Assurance
ISO 9001 certification ensures customers reliable product quality, minimizing risks associated with defective or inconsistent containers. Customers in highly regulated industries, such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, can rely on NCC’s products for safe, compliant packaging that supports their operational integrity.
A Partner Committed to Safety and Sustainability
ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certifications demonstrate NCC’s dedication to a safe work environment and sustainable practices.
The Importance of Our Internal Audit Department
This year, NCC established a dedicated internal audit department to ensure each location’s adherence to ISO standards. Our multidisciplinary audit team includes 12 trained auditors, representing roles across the organization, from shop floor team members to the VP of Operations. This diverse team structure promotes objectivity and supports best practices across NCC’s national footprint.
Regular training sessions held at our facilities provide auditors with both classroom and practical experience, and annual internal audits at each site mirror external certification audits, reinforcing our commitment to continual improvement.
By conducting our own internal audits, we gain the flexibility to adapt quickly to quality challenges and implement best practices across all locations. This approach also empowers our team members to understand quality from an operational perspective, fostering a proactive mindset that anticipates and resolves potential issues.
Continuous Improvement Through the Toyota Production System (TPS)
At NCC, we know that our team members are the foundation of our success. That’s why we are continuously investing the growth and development of our front-line team members, who help us improve the quality, productivity, and safety of our operation.
NCC applies principles from the Toyota Production System (TPS) to enhance quality and efficiency across our operations. TPS enables NCC to standardize processes, reduce waste, and increase overall productivity, which ultimately benefits our customers through improved reliability and a consistent, high-quality product.
